I was feeling a bit sorry myself because I never got to read Mouse her bedtime story in peace, without hearing the caterwauling that comes from her sister as soon as the clock strikes 7pm. Since I wrote that post, I’m pleased to report that things have settled down a bit, and occasionally I do find myself on bedtime story duty.
I recently got sent a lovely book for her called Jungle Jam, by Noam and Louise Lederman. It’s got animals and music in it, making it an instant winner Chez Mouse Moo. The basic gist of the story is that a monkey called Mikey fancies himself as a musical artiste, and sets off in search of critical acclaim, meeting a host of other animals along the way. However, when each animal asks Mikey if he’d like to join them, he declines as he thinks he’s better as a lone ranger. Of course, that would make for a rather sorry ending, and so eventually Mikey joins forces with all the other animals to create a jungle troupe of musicians. Sorry, I should have put a spoiler alert in there. Meh, us parents can see these things a mile off.
The premise of the book is to introduce music from around the world to little ones, and develop the idea of teamwork and things generally being more fun when shared with others. It’s the perfect length for bedtime, with a little bit of repetition on each page for older children to join in with. The illustrations are brightly coloured and easily recognisable, with plenty of detail on each page.
At the back of the book is a craft activity to make your own musical instruments, and a page summarising the benefits of reading with children. Both very nice touches, quite Blue Peter-esque!
